Mission Statement
The purpose of the Granger Homestead
Society, Inc. is to promote knowledge and understanding of the history of
Four generations of the Granger Family lived in Canandaigua. The Grangers were involved in everything from the Congregational Church Board to the Ontario County Agricultural Society. They helped projects like the first railroad in Ontario County and the Erie Canal come to fruition. They were active in the Civil War, national, state, and local politics.
This tradition of community involvement is carried on at the Homestead today by its Board of Trustees, its professional staff, members, and volunteers.
To preserve this twelve acre parcel of American History. To share it with tourists, school children, and the community. To instill a foundation and an understanding of our heritage, so that we can move into the future with pride, because of our past.
The Granger Homestead Society is a not-for-profit organization. Our holdings consist of an 1816 Federal House and furnishings, one of the largest horse-drawn vehicle collections in Western New York State, five outbuildings, and twelve acres.
500 members, a core of dedicated volunteers, a history of committed community leaders serving as trustees on the Board of Trustees; these are the people who keep their Homestead alive. They clean, bake, paint, construct, and instruct. They give tours and raise money.
We are a totally self-sustaining organization. Grants help us with special projects, but our operating expenses are raised by memberships, gifts, bequests, and special events. We are fiscally solvent. Membership is 20% of our operating funds.
Your membership is important to us!
Our operating budget is less than $200,000 a year. It isn't easy to maintain our site, keep professional standards and staff, and serve the public on this budget, but we do it.
For as little as $35 per year, you can be a member of the Granger "family" which has been a part of our history since 1816.
Or, if you are a member consider upgrading your membership level.
Thank you for your contribution. Remember, it's tax deductible to the limits allowed by law.
